Not knowing the answers changed everything...
Secret parking garages, private entrances, and cameras were everywhere. My friends and I were able to volunteer our way into a highly anticipated event. Oprah was just a few feet away and I saw that she was looking for someone named Mark Burnett. Honestly, I had no idea who he was, but my assignment was to go and get him from a private entrance so they could begin the red carpet experience.
On my way to this private entrance, I googled who Mark was and saw that he created two of the most recognizable TV series, Shark Tank and Survivor. Yikes, I had no idea!
As Mark and his wife Roma stepped off the elevator, their smiles calmed my nerves immediately. Mark greeted me and asked me three questions:
- Will my assistant sit close by?
- Where is my personal security detail?
- Will we be able to sit by our friends? [The Olsteens]
OMG. I didn't know the answers...
I was completely caught off guard, but I had to think on my feet and QUICK. Even though I didn't know, I went to find the answers.
...needless to say, I felt frustrated with myself after the event. There were avoidable situations throughout the evening, and I didn't feel well prepared.
I started to write down some of the mistakes I experienced and potential solutions. Here are my top 5 that made the list of 50-plus items.
5 Common Mistakes When Planning an Event:
- Assuming everything will go RIGHT
- Not choosing the RIGHT team
- Failing to track changes
- Poor communication
- No strategic preparation
I kept asking myself, how could one anticipate problems? How can one have an event that goes according to the plan? And what type of SUPER team is required to solve issues and keep things running smoothly? These kinds of questions hurt my brain and actually kept me up at night.
I ended up CREATING a business that answered these very questions... you won't believe what I discovered!
Check out my email tomorrow, titled:
"Be the change you want to see."
All my best,
